Mohammed Jasim won the I-League with Gokulam Kerala.
At the age of 26, Mohammed Jasim emerged as a prominent figure in the footballing landscape of Kerala. A versatile defender, he has donned the Gokulam Kerala FC jersey with immense pride and passion. However, his journey to success has not been without its fair share of challenges and pivotal moments that shaped his career.
In an exclusive interview with Khel Now, he opens up about his early days, experiences with Gokulam Kerala FC, and his aspirations for the future.
Early Influences and Journey of Passion
Jasim’s football journey started with the support of individuals living near his home. “Some individuals living near my home provided significant support during my childhood. Among them, Coach P Dileep stands out for recognizing my talent and encouraging me to join an academy.”
Born in Valanchery, Jasim’s passion for football began during his higher secondary school years at Malabar Special Police Academy. “I discovered my passion for the sport during those years and realized that I could pursue a career as a professional footballer. I learned the fundamentals of football there,” he said. He honed his skills during the two years he spent at the academy, earning a spot in the Kerala U-19 team.
Soon after, he got his big break when he was selected to play for Vasco SC in the Goa Professional League, where he played for almost a year. “I attended trials for Vasco SC and was selected to play for them for nearly a year in the Goa Professional League. These experiences were instrumental in shaping my football career, teaching me what it takes to be a footballer, and encouraging me to dream of becoming a professional player.”

Trials and Triumphs
Jasim’s journey with Gokulam Kerala FC commenced in 2018 when he impressed during trials for the reserve team, stating, “My journey with Gokulam Kerala began in 2018 when they selected me during one of their trials for the reserve team.
He added, “Impressed by my performance, they signed me up, and I spent two years playing with the reserves, participating in the Kerala Premier League. In 2020, I was promoted to the senior team, which was a memorable year as Gokulam Kerala won the I-League, and I had the opportunity to play alongside experienced senior players.”
A Memorable Journey with Gokulam Kerala FC
He added, “Being part of the club during their back-to-back league victories in 2020-21 and 2021-22 was a fantastic experience.”
Reflecting on his time with the club, Mohammed Jasim expressed, “These three years with Gokulam have been incredibly special to me. The club not only helped me develop my football skills but also instilled discipline and emphasized the significance of a proper diet. Their guidance played a pivotal role in my growth as a professional player. Gokulam Kerala FC feels like a second family, and I cherish countless memories from my time with the club.”
The Influence of Coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese
When asked about the key figure behind his success, Jassim promptly mentioned Vincenzo Alberto Annese, the head coach of Gokulam Kerala from 2020 to 2022. “Coach Annese played a crucial role in my career by promoting me to the senior team,” Jassim praised. “His guidance and motivation pushed me to compete for a starting spot in the team. Under his mentorship, I learned valuable insights about football and was encouraged every step of the way. I am grateful for the significant role he entrusted me with.”
The Role of Mohamed Irshad
During a challenging period marked by a severe injury, Mohamed Irshad, the former Gokulam Kerala player, played a crucial role in Jasim’s life.” I hold a special place in my heart for Mohamed Irshad, who played a crucial role during a difficult period when I faced a severe injury. His assistance and care were invaluable, and I remain deeply grateful to him.”
Dreams for the Future
Despite his journey with Gokulam Kerala FC, Mohammed Jasim harbours dreams of playing for Kerala Blasters, a team that holds a special place in the hearts of footballers from Kerala. “Every footballer in Kerala dreams of playing for Kerala Blasters, and I too hope to be part of the team in the coming years,” he said with determination.
On Facing Pressure
Recalling his early days with Gokulam Kerala FC, Jasim admits facing immense pressure on his debut match. However, with time and experience, he managed to overcome it.
He stated, “During my first match for Gokulam Kerala FC, I faced immense pressure. With more opportunities and experience, I learned from my mistakes and improved my game, which significantly boosted my confidence. The continuous motivation from the coaching staff, coupled with unwavering support from my family and the passionate Gokulam Kerala fans, played a crucial role in my progress.”
Inspired by Anas Edathodika
Jasim also revealed that his football idol is former national team defender Anas Edathodika. “I admire his playing style immensely. He was a popular defender in Kerala in the last few years,” he said with admiration.
Striving for Excellence
Currently, Mohammed Jasim is determined to enhance his skills, with a particular focus on crossing and decision-making. “I am putting in my best efforts to train diligently and enhance my skills, especially in areas like crossing and decision-making. I am determined to give my best and continuously strive for progress,” he said with a strong resolve and concluded.
