Alphonso Davies remains a crucial player for Canada’s chances in the tournament.

Canada will open their Copa America campaign against the reigning champions Argentina in the tournament’s opening match. Led by Jesse Marsch, the Reds will be the underdogs in Group A which also includes Chile and Peru.

Despite being drawn into a tough group, Canada are bringing a mixture of youth and experience to the tournament with players like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David leading the charge. This will be Canada’s first time participating in the history of Copa America and they are eager to make their mark.

Canada predicted lineup (Formation: 4-4-2)

GK: Maxime Crepeau

Maxime Crepeau has become a regular under Jesse Marsch who has shown faith in him so far. He didn’t disappoint either after keeping a clean sheet against France in the last friendly match. The goalkeeper denied Mbappe twice in the match.

Crepeau plays his club football for MLS side Portland Timbers with whom he made 13 appearances this term without keeping a clean sheet. He did however save a penalty out of the two he faced.

RB: Alistair Johnston

Alistair Johnston plays his club football for Celtic after making the move away from MLS in 2022. He had an outstanding season with the Scottish side making 42 appearances, scoring one and assisting another seven. Johnston is an attacking-minded right-back who has excellent passing abilities as he created the chances for the team throughout the campaign.

CB: Moise Bombito

Moise Bombito impressed for Colorado Rapids after making 16 appearances while scoring two goals. He is a threat from setpieces as he can score goals from there. Jesse Marsch has shown plenty of faith in him as he got his first cap under him.

Bombito played two friendly matches against big teams like the Netherlands and France. His first outing was a difficult one as his nation lost 4-0 against the Dutch. However, he did bounce back in the next match to keep a clean sheet against France.

CB: Derek Cornelius

Derek Cornelius is probably the experienced one in the back for the team after playing his trade for Malmö FF in Sweden. He made 12 appearances this season scoring two goals. Cornelius is a fast, agile defender who is comfortable with both feet.

He is a ball-playing defender who can make diagonal passes from the back to release the pressure. Having made his international debut in 2018, he has made 20 appearances.

LB: Alphonso Davies

Alphonso Davies is arguably one of the best left-backs in the world after playing several successful seasons at Bayern Munich. He has already made over 195 appearances for them scoring 11 goals. He had a game at left back against Lionel Messi during the Bayern-Barca match where he was a constant threat.

There are speculations that this summer he will probably move to Real Madrid who have been impressed by his performance over the years.

RM: Tajon Buchanan

Tajon Buchanan plays his club football for Inter Milan after making the move from Club Brugge in the summer. He is a versatile player who can play several positions in the side according to the team’s needs. He played in the right wingback position for the team where he was a constant threat. Buchanan made 10 appearances this season and scored his first goal against Frosinone.

CM: Ismael Kone

Ismael Kone is a central midfielder who plays for EFL Championship side Watford. He had a fine season with them having scored four goals in 42 matches while also providing three assists. Having just turned 22 this month, he is still raw having yet to show his full potential despite showing flashes of brilliance. While Kone has a strong defensive presence, he can also contribute in the attacking areas.

CM: Stephen Eustaquio

The FC Porto man had a good season as he made 40 appearances in all competitions. He netted three goals while also providing two assists. He mostly played as a central midfielder for the Portuguese outfit but is also effective as a defensive midfielder.

Stephen Eustaquio has excellent stamina and technique to cover an ample amount of ground in a game. Eustaquio also had an impressive passing accuracy of 84.4% while his tackle-won percentage is 65.9%.

LM: Liam Millar

Probably the most versatile player in the Canada national team other than Davies who can cover some positions. He has played in both the wingback positions and can play anywhere across the midfield. He has played in the left midfield position in both the friendlies and was particularly impressive against France.

Millar plays his club football for Basel and was on loan at Preston North End this season where he made 36 appearances scoring five goals and assisting another five.

ST: Jonathan David

Jonathan David will be the key man for Canada in the Copa America after an incredible season with Lille. He made 47 appearances for them this season scoring 26 goals and assisting seven others.

He is already being courted by many top clubs who have followed his quick progress. David is a fast striker who has excellent finishing ability and can score goals regularly.

ST: Cyle Larin

Cyle Larin plays club football for Mallorca in LaLiga with whom he made 42 appearances this season scoring seven goals and assisting another three. Larin is a tall, physical striker who likes to dominate opponents in aerial duels and in holding up play. He is also deadly from set pieces due to his aerial abilities. The forward also helps the team in defending corners.
