The Indian Premier League emerged as one of the most searched sports events in India in 2024.
The year 2024 has been great for sports fanatics. We witnessed many amazing sports events, including the Paralympics, Olympics, T20 World Cup, and more. The Indian Premier League (IPL) was one such event that garnered much attention in India. Other notable events include the T20 World Cup, the 2024 Olympics, the Pro Kabaddi League, and the Indian Super League.
This year, the world’s biggest international sporting event, the Olympics, took place in Paris, thrilling fans across the globe. It was a bittersweet event for India, as the country experienced several heartbreaking fourth-place finishes, surpassing the number of medals won.
On a brighter note, the Indian men’s cricket team triumphed in the T20 World Cup, bringing joy to millions of fans. Additionally, franchise leagues in Kabaddi and football were widely enjoyed by sports enthusiasts.
Beyond Indian interests, two other major tournaments captured the attention of Indian fans — the Copa America and the UEFA European Football Championships. Both events created a buzz and were followed with great excitement.

10. U19 Cricket World Cup
The U19 Cricket World Cup is the 10th most searched sports event in India. The 2024 edition of the U19 Cricket World Cup was held in South Africa from January 19 to February 11. Defending Champions, India failed to defend their title as they lost to Australia in the finals. Meanwhile, hosts South Africa finished fourth in the tournament after losing to India in the semis.

Fans were witness to some of the great and close finishes in the U19 World Cup. Pakistan finished third after losing to Australia in the semifinals. Both the semifinals were a thriller. Four Indians were also named in the ICC Team of the Tournament.
9. UEFA European Football Championship
The UEFA European Football Championship also known as Euro finds ninth place in the list. The European Championship is one of the most popular football tournaments in the world. India have a great fan following in football and watched Euro 2024 with great interest.
Spain emerged champions at Euro 2024 after defeating England in the finals. This was Spain’s fourth title in the tournament. Hosts Germany bowed out in the quarterfinals after defeat to eventual champion Spain, while France and Netherlands were knocked out in the semis.
Meanwhile, the defending Champion Italy lost to Switzerland in the Round of 16 and failed to defend their title.
8. Duleep Trophy
The Indian domestic red ball tournament, Duleep Trophy, was the eighth most searched event in India. The 2024 edition of the Duleep trophy took place from September 5 to 22. There were four teams in the tournament—India A, India B, India C and India D.
India internationals Shubman Gill, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer were the captains of the teams. India A won the tournament, while India C finished second followed by India B and India D.

7. Copa America
South American football tournament Copa America is seventh on this list. The 48th edition of the Copa was held in the USA. Defending champions Argentina successfully retained their title and won the Copa America for a record 16th time. They defeated Colombia in the finals.

Meanwhile, hosts USA were eliminated in the group stages itself. Uruguay finished third after defeating Canada in a thriller penalty shootout. Lautaro Martínez was the leading goal scorer of the tournament with five goals.
6. Women’s Premier League
The Women’s Premier League 2024 was held in Bengaluru and Delhi across two legs respectively. Royal Challengers Bangalore won their first title after defeating Delhi Capitals in the final. This was a second successive final defeat for Delhi Capitals. Meanwhile, RCB after a horrendous opening season came out flying this season to lift their maiden title.

Meanwhile, defending champions Mumbai Indians finished third after losing to RCB in the eliminator. UP Warriorz finished fourth and Gujarat Giants finished last for the second successive time.
5. Indian Super League
The Indian Super League is the top-tier domestic football league in India. In the 2023-24 season, Mohan Bagan FC won the ISL Shield by topping the group stage while Mumbai City FC won the ISL Cup after defeating the Shield winners in the title match.
The 2023-24 season of the ISL was special in a way as it was the first season where a team promoted from the second division (I-League) took part in the league. Punjab FC earned that honour by winning the previous edition of the I-League.

4. Pro Kabaddi League
The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) is a franchise Kabaddi league in India. The 2023-24 season of the PKL was its 10th edition, with Puneri Paltan emerging champions after defeating Haryana Steelers in an intense final.
The 2024 edition, which is the 11th season, kicked off on October 18 and has been a great tournament so far with so many thrillers and close matches.
3. Olympics
The multi-sporting extravaganza Olympics is third on this list. This year the Olympics were held in Paris. The USA topped the medal tally with 40 golds and overall 126 medals at Paris Olympics while China finished second with 40 gold medals and 91 in total. Hosts France finished fifth in the medal tally with 64 medals (16 gold).
Meanwhile, India had a heartbreaking Olympic campaign as they finished 71st with just six medals (1 Silver and 5 Bronze).
The Summer Games were not without controversies. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was controversially disqualified from the tournament just before her gold medal bout. Meanwhile, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif found herself embroiled in a gender war. That, however, did not stop her from winning gold.
2. T20 World Cup
No surprises that the T20 World Cup is second on this list. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, their first ICC title since 2013, after beating South Africa in a thrilling final. The title, held in the USA and West Indies, was sweeter for India especially after their heartbreak in the 2023 ODI World Cup final at home.
Moreover, the T20 World Cup also produced some thrilling matches, with hosts USA’s spectacular win over Pakistan topping the list.

The Indian Premier League once again takes the top spot as the most searched sports event in India. The 17th edition of IPL saw Kolkata Knight riders winning the championship after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. This was KKR’s third title and first since 2014.
While the 2024 edition of the IPL played a role in making a trending search topic on google, the IPL 2025 player auction also certainly played a role. The auction saw Shreyas Iyer and then Rishabh Pant breaking the benchmark for the most expensive player in the tournament history.
