Commonwealth Games 2026 Medal

The day turned out to be a historic one for India across multiple disciplines in the Commonwealth Games 2026

India added six more medals to its tally on Friday, going past the 20-medal mark at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

For starters, the nation won its first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the sport of judo. And if one wasn’t enough, there were two, with Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh finishing at the top of the podium. Yamini Mourya clinched a silver medal in her event, but not without going down fighting like a warrior in the final.

Then, Neeraj Chopra and Yash Vir Singh ensured a double podium finish for India in the men’s javelin throw final, pocketing silver and bronze, respectively. This is Neeraj’s second CWG medal, having clinched gold at the 2018 Gold Coast edition.

Amongst all this, a solitary bronze medal might get shadowed. The same won’t be true for Tejaswin Shankar, though, as his bronze medal in men’s decathlon will be viewed as one of the best performances for India across the Glasgow Games, with him having battled fitness issues throughout unarguably the most gruelling event in athletics.

And finally, barely a handful of people across the globe would have remotely anticipated what the Indian boxers did today. Ten grapplers played their semi-finals. All ten are now set to fight for gold. Surely that is where the adjectives run out.

Medal events in which Indian athletes contested on 31st July

India clinched its first-ever gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in the sport of judo. Asmita Dey in the Women’s 48kg section was the first to create history, winning her quarterfinal by IPPON, before holding her nerve in Golden Scoring in the semifinal and final.

The wait for the second gold wasn’t too long, as Harsh Singh put on a thoroughly dominant display in the Men’s 60 kg event. He secured victories by IPPON in the R16 as well as the quarterfinal before winning 10-0 in the final two knockout fixtures.

In the women’s 57kg category, Yamini Mourya was extremely impressive, winning the quarter-final as well as the semi-final by ippon.

She then put on a strong defensive performance against World Number #13 Englishwoman Acelya Toprak in the gold medal match before losing by IPPON during Golden Scoring and settling for silver.

The other two Indian judokas in action on the day, Shraddha Chopade (Women’s 52kg) and Rohit Majgul (Men’s 66kg) lost in the quarter-finals, before also going down in the Repechage round.

Friday saw sensational results across two events for India in athletics. Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra achieved his season’s best mark, measuring 85.83m, to clinch the silver medal in men’s javelin throw.

He put on a consistent display but couldn’t do enough to dethrone World Leader Sri Lankan Rumesh Pathirage, who finished first with 89.75 m.

Yash Vir Singh, out of nowhere, pulled out his personal best on the very last attempt, with the distance of 85.41 m presenting him with bronze. The third Indian in contention, Rohit Yadav, finished seventh, with his best throw measuring 81.56 m.

In men’s decathlon, Tejaswin Shankar, nursing a tendon injury, accumulated a total of 7976 points to pocket the bronze medal. It was a wonderful display of grit and determination from the Indian, who had left the high jump final injured merely a few days ago, without a single successful jump.

Grenada’s Lindon Victor (8096 points) and Canada’s Damian Warner (8036 points) won gold and silver, respectively.

Tejaswin was out of the medal positions before the last two events but managed to outperform England’s Sammy Ball in the Javelin Throw and 1500m run, thus finishing ahead of him at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

In the men’s 400m hurdles final, Santosh Kumar Tamilarasan (50.37) and Yashas Palaksha (51.81) failed to impress, eventually ending in seventh and eighth spots respectively.

The boxing contingent put on a display which few expected. All ten Indian grapplers won their respective semifinals. Among these, reigning World Champion Jaismine reigned triumphant, with the referee stopping the contest.

Eight of the others namely Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg), Ankush (Men’s 80kg), Jadumani Singh (Men’s 55kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (Women’s 51 kg category), Priya (Women’s 60kg), Lovlina Borgohain Women’s 75kg), Sachin (Men’s 60kg) and Narender (Men’s 90 kg+) remarkable secured a unanimous victory. Arundhati Choudhary won 4-0 in her Women’s 70kg semifinal.

In Track Cycling, the Indians in action failed to produce any result of impact. Dinesh Kumar (4:29.267) and Harshveer Sekhon (4:35.524) finished 17th and 19th, respectively, in the men’s 4000m Individual Pursuit Qualifying.

The trio of David Beckham, Ronaldo Singh and Jemsh Singh failed to qualify from the Repechage round in Men’s Keirin.
