Commonwealth Games 2026: Who are India's medal contenders today, August 1 (Day 9)?

India are assured of at least 10 boxing medals on Saturday

The eighth day of competition at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow produced a historic landmark for India, headlined by a sensational double-gold performance on the judo mat.

Asmita Dey scripted history by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal with a dramatic victory over Canada’s Heidi Quach in the Women’s 48 kg final.

Minutes later, Harsh Singh doubled the tally by capturing gold in the Men’s 60 kg final against Australia’s Joshua Katz. Yamini Mourya, who also played in the gold medal match, returned with silver after going down to England’s Acelya Toprak by Ippon in the final.

Neeraj Chopra and Yash Vir Singh then followed it up with a double podium finish in the men’s javelin throw final. While Chopra, playing his only second event of the year after returning from an injury, produced a season-best throw to clinch silver, it was Yash Vir Singh who grabbed the spotlight with a stunning last attempt to claim bronze.

India’s pugilists matched that brilliance in the ring by turning in a flawless 10-0 semi-final sweep, with Preeti Pawar (54 kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57 kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70 kg), Ankush Panghal (80kg), Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (55 kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51 kg), Priya Ghanghas (60 kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), Sachin Siwach (60 kg) and Narender Berwal (90+ kg) all advancing to the gold-medal bouts.

Transitioning into Saturday, August 1 (Day 10), the Indian contingent enters an explosive session dominated by direct hardware battles across boxing, athletics, para-athletics, track cycling, judo, and lawn bowls.

Non-medal preliminary and qualification fixtures begin in the afternoon, starting with Ronaldo Singh and David Beckham in the cycling Men’s Sprint Qualifying to Final rounds.

Over at the velodrome, Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh compete in the Men’s 10 KM Scratch Race Qualifying, aiming to make the evening final.
