Rohit Sharma made the announcement following India’s win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final.
On Saturday, at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados, Rohit Sharma became only the third Indian captain, after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, to win a World Cup trophy when India beat South Africa in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
In a thrilling contest that dragged till the last over, the Men In Blue prevailed by only seven runs with Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh bowling five excellent overs when South Africa needed 30 runs in as many deliveries.
Earlier, Virat Kohli top-scored for India with 76 runs off 59 balls, helping the side reach a competitive total of 176. Kohli, who had scored only 75 runs in the tournament until the final, bagged Man of the Match award, and at the post-match presentation ceremony, he announced his T20I retirement.
In the post-match press conference then, captain Rohit Sharma also announced his retirement from T20Is.
Will Rohit Sharma continue to play in ODIs and tests?
Yes, Rohit will continue to play in ODIs and test cricket; he has taken retirement only from T20Is. Sharma confirmed this in the post-match press conference after the final.
Rohit said, “This was my last [T20I] game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup.
“I wanted this badly. Very hard to put in words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line.”
When a journalist asked if he’s retired only from T20Is, Rohit confirmed, saying “Yeah. Very much still there in ODIs and Tests.”
Rohit finished as the second-highest scorer in the T20 World Cup 2024, scoring 257 runs at a strike rate of 156. He is the leading run-scorer in T20Is right now with 4231 runs in 159 matches and has cracked five T20I hundreds.
