Euro 2024: Denmark’s potential route to the final

The Danes will not have it easy, if they want to reach the final
Denmark have finished second in their group with three consecutive draws, and are through to the knockout stages of the 2024 Euros. Despite this achievement, the Danes will be far from happy with their performances as they are yet to register a victory in the Euros.
Having reached the semi-finals in the last edition of the Euros, Denmark had been definitely deemed by many as a Dark Horse for the Euros. Also, with stalwarts like Eriksen, Hojlund, Christensen and many more, their team has the talent needed to pull off a great shocker.
However, three games into the competition, Denmark’s hopes of making it big in the tournament, is hanging by a fine thread. Denmark finished second in a group containing England, Slovenia and Serbia.
Despite getting an impressive draw against England, Denmark’s other two performances against Serbia and Slovenia were far from convincing and has left Kasper Hjulmand with a task at his hands ahead of the knockout stages.
Fate also doesn’t seem to be on the side of the Danes, as they have been placed in a much more difficult bracket, and have an incredibly tough route to the finals.
With that said, let us take a look at Denmark’s route to the Euro 2024 final.
Last 16: Dortmund, Sunday 30 June
Denmark will face Germany in the round of 16
Having finished second in Group C, Denmark will now have to take on group A winners Germany. The hosts have been in quite some form throughout the competition so far, and are looking quite impeccable.
Denmark have been pretty solid at the back, but they will need to reassess their attacking endeavours if they need to pull off a miracle and perhaps one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
Quarter-final: Stuttgart, Friday 5 July
If Denmark are able to pull off a miracle and get through to the next round, they have a bigger task at their hands, as the winner of Spain VS Georgia awaits them.
Georgia definitely has the best underdog story of the tournament so far, defeating Portugal in the final matchday, to get through to the next rounds. But it seems almost impossible that they will stand any chance against Spain, who have quite simply been perfect so far in the competition. Spain whitewashed the group of death of this year’s Euro and are yet to even concede a goal.
With Spain seeming to be the more likely opponent that Denmark will face, it’s safe to say that the Danes will have to put in their absolute best, and hope that luck stands on their side.
Semi-final: Munich, Tuesday July 9
Should Denmark reach the final four of the Euros, the most likely opponents, given they topped their group so impressively, are Portugal.
France are also a possibility, but the Blues have just not been very impressive in the competition so far. Didier Deschamps’ men are yet to score a goal from open play, and their team is looking quite dismantled and clueless. Having said that, we should not forget that France has perhaps the best squad on paper, and they can rely on their individual talents, to see them through crucial games.
Belgium and Slovenia on the other hand, seem quite unlikely to make it to the Semis through such a tough route.
Final: Berlin, Sunday 14 July
If by some miracle, Denmark defies all odds and makes it to the final of the Euros, they will face one of the big three on the other side of the draw: Netherlands, England and Italy.
With the sort of performances that we have witnessed so far, it seems quite likely that Italy will make it through, as both England and Netherlands are yet to get in their groove in this competition, whereas Italy have a different sort of a pedigree when it comes to the Euros.
Whatever the case, one thing is certain, Denmark surely have perhaps the toughest route to the final that they could’ve imagined. The Danes have the quality on their side, but to face these sorts of nations in such high-stakes games, takes a lot of courage and hard work.
