Newcastle's captain Jamaal Lascelles ruled out for remaining season due to ACL injury
Sven Botman suffered a similar injury before the international break
The news that club leader Jamaal Lascelles has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, only days after teammate Sven Botman suffered the same injury, has shocked Newcastle United. 17 minutes into Newcastle’s thrilling 4-3 victory over West Ham on Saturday, Lascelles was substituted out.
After Botman had surgery during the international break for an ACL injury, the club captain was back in the starting lineup.
Now that Lascelles’ ACL injury has been verified by Newcastle, the defensive player will be sidelined for six to nine months, along with Botman.
‘Newcastle United can confirm that club captain Jamaal Lascelles suffered a rupture to the ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s victory over West Ham United,‘ a Newcastle statement read.
‘After seeing a specialist consultant, he is expected to undergo surgery next week and will be out for 6-9 months. Everyone at NUFC extends their best wishes to Jamaal for a full and speedy recovery.’
Earlier this month, Newcastle announced that Lascelles’ contract had been extended by one year, through June 2025.Due to an injury issue at Newcastle, Lascelles has made 26 appearances this season, filling in for Botman. After rupturing ligaments early in the campaign, Botman was sidelined for three months.

Following the international break, Newcastle revealed that Botman will require ACL surgery due to an injury to the identical knee. In the 4-3 victory over West Ham, Emil Krafth—who replaced Lascelles—and Miguel Almiron also sustained injuries for the Magpies.
He joined the Magpies in August 2014, and earlier this month he celebrated making his 250th appearance for the team. He also signed a one-year contract extension with the club earlier this month, extending his tenure at St James’ Park until June 2025.Miguel Almiron and Tino Livramento also sustained injuries against the Hammers. With only two veteran defenders who are routinely eligible for duty at centre back—Fabian Schar and Dan Burn—Howe’s team is now in serious need of center-back reinforcements this summer.
In addition, the latter has frequently been used as a left-back. Although Paul Dummett and Emil Krafth are both capable of playing centre back, they are usually considered benchwarmers.
