Roman Reigns won the Universal Championship at Payback 2020 and has been a dominant undefeated champion ever since. He defeated WWE Champion Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38 in a Winners Takes All- Champion vs Champion match and upgraded himself as the Undisputed WWE Universal champion.
Roman Reigns has been the Universal Champion for more than three years and the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion for one and a half years. At this stage, we recall some of the close calls which would have almost ended Roman Reigns' championship reign. So here are the four times Roman Reigns nearly lost the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
Vs Brock Lesnar in the Last Man Standing Match at SummerSlam 2022
At SummerSlam 2022, Roman Reigns faced Brock Lesnar in a Last Man Standing Match, with a stipulation that if Brock loses he should never face Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship again. Brock Lesnar came on a tractor to the ring and jumped on Reigns to start the match. During the match Lesnar drove the tractor to the ring and lifted the stage.
Paul Heyman mocked Lesnar with the title and Roman speared him. Austin Theory attempted to Cash-in when both were down. But Brock Lesnar delivered an F-5. At the end, Roman attacked Lesnar with the briefcase and the championship title. The Usos Superkicked Lesnar and buried him through the broken table, steel chairs and other weapons and stood on him to make Reigns retain the Championship.
Vs Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle 2022
Another close call is when Roman Reigns faced Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle in the United Kingdom. Drew McIntyre had the upper hand, but after the Roman Reigns touch of knocking the referee off, brought the control to his side. When both laid down Austin Theory ran to cash-in his Money in the Bank, but was knocked out by Gypsy King Tyson Fury, who sat on the audience side. When Drew delivered the Claymore at the end for the pinfall, NXT star Solo Sikoa came out of nowhere to cost the match for Drew and help Roman retain his championship.
Vs Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39
At WrestleMania 39, the 2023 Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes faced Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. This is one of the highly anticipated matches where Cody Rhodes was the favorite to win the match. They delivered a tough fight, where Cody took the match in his control as Solo Sikoa was sent backstage.
At the end, Rhodes delivered two Cross Rhodes and when measured it for the third one, Paul Heyman distracted the referee which made Solo sneak into the ring and hit a Samoan Spike on Cody. Roman then speared Cody to secure the win.
Vs Jey Uso in the Tribal Combat Match at SummerSlam 2023
At SummerSlam 2023, Roman Reigns faced his cousin Jey Uso in a Tribal Combat match, where both the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship and the Tribal Chief status was on the line. The match had no rules and regulations and held in anything goes rules.
Both risked their bodies and pushed their limits, with various weapons coming into play. At one point, the match turned into a two-on-one handicap match where Solo Sikoa joined Roman Reigns and attacked Jey Uso brutally. Jey Uso took both and went for a solid win, but Jimmy Uso turned on Jey Uso by breaking the pinfall and super kicking him on the face to make Roman Reigns win.
