Kane Williamson will make his sixth appearance for New Zealand at the ICC T20 World Cup.
With less than a week to go for last date of naming the initial squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, 2022 semi-finalists New Zealand have named their 15-member squad for the upcoming prestigious tournament in the West Indies and USA in June on April 29. Black Caps will be playing their first match against Afghanistan in Guyana on June 7 followed by further matches with West Indies, Uganda and Papua New Guinea.
The Black Caps have gone for the experienced squad, as they named veteran player Kane Williamson as their skipper and also included fast bowling pair Tim Southee and Trent Boult.
Williamson will be making his sixth appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup as a player and fourth as a captain, whereas Southee is set to make his seventh appearance in the mega event. New Zealand will be aiming to clinch their maiden title in the shortest format with the experienced squad they have announced.
As expected, the Kiwis have not picked pacers Kyle Jamieson and Adam Milne as they are sidelined due to their respective injuries. In a surprising turn of events, New Zealand didn’t include O’Rourke, Tom Latham, Tim Seifert, and Will Young, who had a brilliant run recently in white-ball cricket.
Selectors also left out veteran all-rounder Colin Munro, and they opted to go for youngster Rachin Ravindra, who had a phenomenal ODI World Cup in 2023. Devon Conway also made his return to the Kiwi squad for T20 World Cup 2024, despite being ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to a thumb injury.
The Black Caps are also taking young pacer Ben Sears as a traveling reserve if required. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead felt that the venues in the Caribbean Islands will have varied conditions and they have selected the players, who can adapt those conditions easily.
“I’d like to congratulate everyone named today. It’s a special time representing your country at a world tournament. We expect the venues in the West Indies to offer quite varied conditions and feel we’ve selected a squad with the scope to adapt to those conditions,” Stead said as quoted by the ICC’s official website.
New Zealand squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024:
Kane Williamson (C), Finn Allen, Devon Conway (Wk), Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Trent Boult
Traveling Reserve: Bean Sears
