‘The GOAT’ retires from professional wrestling
At the WWE Money in the Bank 2024 PLE, John Cena made a monumental announcement, officially declaring his retirement from WWE. The announcement came amid a thunderous reception from the crowd, with the on-screen graphic noting the noise level at a staggering 105 decibels. Cena, sporting a red and blue hat, a red graphic tee, and his signature jorts, was visibly moved by the fans singing his entrance theme.
As Cena took the microphone, he was met with a mix of cheers and chants of “Cena!” Addressing the crowd, Cena began, “Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE.” The reaction was immediate and loud, with fans chanting, “NO!” and expressing their disbelief.
Cena continued, acknowledging the mixed reactions and stating, “There are a lot of questions, like why here? Cena wants to talk about Toronto. Cena wants to talk about Canada and Canadians.” He reflected on his two-decade-long career, noting the highs and lows he had experienced. Cena highlighted the unwavering support of Canadian fans, saying, “Whether WWE is hot or cold, Canadians always show up.”
A loud “Cena” chant erupted, and Cena, sounding emotional, encouraged the fans to make noise for themselves, attributing his success to their steadfast support. “They built all this. That’s why this is the perfect place for me to say what I have to say,” he said.
John Cena will compete in his last WrestleMania in 2025
John Cena went on to explain the timing of his announcement, linking it to the symbolic opportunity represented by Money in the Bank. He assured the crowd that his farewell wouldn’t end that night but would be filled with opportunities. Cena revealed his plans for his final matches: “Raw makes history when it moves to Netflix. Cena will be there. Along with that history-making first, they’ll build some unforgettable lasts. The 2025 Royal Rumble will be his last. The 2025 Elimination Chamber will be his last. Cena is here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas WrestleMania 2025 will be the last WrestleMania he competes in.”
Ending his speech on a heartfelt note, Cena thanked the fans, calling their “Thank you, Cena” chant an “incredible gesture of kindness.” He expressed gratitude for their support over the years, saying, “Thank you for letting me play in the house you built for so many years. Thank you for your voice and your honesty because it’s beautifully brutal. Most of all, thank you for allowing me to be here with you tonight.”
In his final message to the WWE Universe, Cena declared, “If you’re watching at home or one of the insanely loud in Toronto, Canada, or if you’re a WWE Superstar, if you want some, come get some! The last time is now!” With his music playing and the crowd roaring, Cena embraced his wife at ringside and made his exit, leaving the WWE Universe with a bittersweet farewell to one of the greatest Superstars in WWE history.
