For many young footballers in India, the Indian Super League (ISL) represents a golden opportunity to showcase their talent on a grand stage and potentially earn lucrative contracts. However, 18-year-old Som Kumar, a promising player in the Indian U-20 squad and a current member of NK Olimpija Ljubljana U-19 in Slovenia, had a different path in mind.

In a revealing interview in Khel Now's 'Beyond the Scores' podcast, Som Kumar discussed his decision to resist the temptation of joining an ISL club and opting to stay in Europe to advance his football career.

Som Kumar's journey to Slovenia has been an incredible one, marked by dedication, hard work, and a commitment to reaching his fullest potential. Playing for NK Olimpija Ljubljana U-19, a prestigious Slovenian club, has provided him with invaluable opportunities to develop as a player.

The training he receives in Europe is exceptional, and he firmly believes that the progress he's making in Slovenia is instrumental in shaping his football career. In his own words, "At the moment, I think that the progress that I'm making over here in Slovenia is really helpful in my career, and the training I'm getting is amazing…"

However, the allure of the ISL beckoned, and in early January, Som Kumar received a chance to train with an ISL club's first team. This was an exciting prospect for any young footballer, especially one seeking recognition and exposure. He not only trained alongside experienced professionals but also had the opportunity to witness a match and even travel with the team.

Prioritizing Progress: Choosing Europe over ISL

Despite the attractive offer and the allure of playing in front of his home crowd, Som Kumar chose to stay true to his original plan. He acknowledges that the decision wasn't easy, but he remained steadfast in his focus. Elaborating on his choice, he explained, "That was a good experience for me; it helped me understand how an ISL team works, and they offered me a contract. It's nothing that I have against the club or the ISL, but at the moment, I think my focus is to stay in Europe and train in Europe."
