Indian football great Mohammed Habib passes away
Mohammed Habib had an illustrious football career.
Indian football is in mourning as the nation bids farewell to one of its greatest icons, Mohammed Habib, who passed away at the age of 74. Born in 1949 in Hyderabad, Telangana, Habib’s legacy as a former Indian football player and captain will forever be etched in the annals of the sport’s history.
Habib’s journey in football began with a passion that would eventually lead him to become a trailblazer in Indian football. Recognized as India’s ‘First Professional Football Player,’ Habib’s influence spanned decades and generations. His remarkable career spanned from 1965 to 1975, during which he proudly donned the national jersey and showcased his prowess on the field in various international tournaments.
Renowned for his role as a forward in the Indian national football team, Habib not only represented the country but also played an instrumental role in their success. His contributions extended beyond his playing days. After his initial professional football journey with City College Old Boys’ Club from 1966 to 1968, Habib went on to become a cherished member of revered Indian clubs such as East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mohammedan SC.
As his playing days transitioned, Habib’s dedication to the sport remained steadfast. He embarked on a coaching journey, becoming an integral part of the Tata Football Academy and even taking on the role of chief coach at the Indian Football Association academy in Haldia. Habib’s impact was felt on and off the field, as he guided Mohammedan SC in domestic competitions across various periods, leaving an indelible mark on the team’s legacy.
His achievements were a testament to his skill and dedication. Habib’s illustrious career boasted victories such as the Santosh Trophy with Bengal in 1969, IFA Shield in 1970 and 1974 with East Bengal, Federation Cup in 1980-81 with East Bengal, and an Asian Games Bronze Medal in 1970 with the Indian team, among others. His influence reached beyond borders, as he helped India secure a third-place finish in the Merdeka Tournament in 1970 and claim victory in the Pesta Sukan Cup in Singapore in 1971.
Awards adorned his remarkable journey, with the Arjuna Award in 1980, the East Bengal “Bharat Gaurav Award” in 2015, and the prestigious Banga Bibhushan in 2018, bestowed upon him by the Government of West Bengal.
Mohammed Habib’s contributions to Indian football are immeasurable, touching the lives of players, fans, and the football community as a whole. His legacy, shaped by his performances on the field, coaching acumen, and dedication to the sport, will continue to inspire generations of football enthusiasts. As the nation mourns his passing, his memory will live on through the stories and achievements that have left an enduring mark on Indian football history.
