2021 was a great year for one-half of The New Day

In 2021, Xavier Woods achieved a significant milestone in his professional wrestling career by winning the prestigious King of the Ring tournament. His victory at WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia marked a high point, showcasing his talents and solidifying his status as a top singles competitor within WWE.

WWE announced the return of the King of the Ring tournament in 2021, the first since 2019. The field was star-studded, featuring eight superstars—four from SmackDown and four from Raw—all vying for the crown. This return generated significant excitement among fans, especially after Shinsuke Nakamura vacated the crown earlier in the year, leaving the throne open for a new contender.

How did it all begin?

On the SmackDown side, Finn Balor faced Cesaro in the first round, and Sami Zayn went head-to-head with Rey Mysterio. Balor and Zayn emerged victorious, setting up a highly anticipated semifinal clash. Balor, who had recently returned to the main roster, proved his dominance by defeating Zayn to secure his place in the finals.

The Raw side of the bracket saw Xavier Woods taking on Ricochet and Jinder Mahal facing off against Kofi Kingston. Woods and Mahal advanced to the semifinals, where Woods overcame Mahal to earn his spot in the final match at Crown Jewel.

Overcoming “Prince” Balor in King of the Ring finals

The final match of the 2021 King of the Ring tournament took place at WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia, where Xavier Woods faced Finn Balor. Balor, known as “The Prince,” entered the match as the favorite due to his impressive resume and recent performances. He had been seeking a significant win after a controversial loss to Roman Reigns in a Universal Championship match at Extreme Rules.

Despite Balor’s favored status, Xavier Woods was determined to seize this opportunity. Woods avoided Balor’s Coup de Grâce attempt and countered with his signature Limit Break elbow drop, securing the biggest singles victory of his career. This win not only crowned him as the new King of the Ring but also marked a pivotal moment in his career.

Following his victory, Woods took his place on the throne, donned the crown, and celebrated his achievement. The image of Woods as King of the Ring resonated with fans, symbolizing his hard work and dedication.
